May marks the beginning of the highly anticipated Alaska cruise season. Cruises to Alaska in May can often be some of the most enjoyable. Good weather in May is not unusual in Southeast Alaska and calm seas within the Inside Passage can make for a very pleasant vacation.

Well, our May 31st cruise was entirely the opposite. It was actually hot all through the Inside Passage. Ketchikan, Juneau and even in Glacier Bay, we soaked up the sunny 80 degree weather that was a bit unusual for this area. Warm days are not that uncommon but it doesn't often get so hot this early in the summer. What was also very nice was that the waters of the Inside Passage were extremely calm and in some cases were so glassy that the reflections were near mirror images of the coastlines and mountains.
May is not just the beginning of the Alaska cruise season, but it is also the perfect time to cruise if your on a tighter budget. With May being a time of the season that is typically more difficult for the cruise lines to fill, their cruise fares are typically reduced in order to fill all the staterooms on the ships. And if that's not enough, there are the last minute cruise deals that often come out around the April 15 tax deadline where you can save even more on the cruise fares if you can take advantage of a short notice vacation.
