Situated on the shores of Puget Sound and surrounded by the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east, Seattle’s City skyline is absolutely breathtaking with its shimmering glass high-rises intermixed among 100 year old historical buildings. This stunning waterfront city has been closely tied to Alaska ever sense the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 when gold was first discovered in Bonanza Creek located in the Yukon Territory. Word spread setting off the Klondike stampede; some 100,000 people passed through the Seattle on their way to the gold fields in Alaska.
There's many good reasons why we enjoy Seattle as a destination besides just the magnificent cruise port. This is a city that is full of life, a city that lives for adventure and a place that offers many opportunities for relaxation and romance. We enjoy so much of Seattle that we spend a few days there both before and after each of our Alaskan cruises.
Seattle as a Destination
My wife once asked me, is it the a vibrant nightlife or the unique shopping opportunities, the abundant waterfront parks or the romantic rides on the State Ferries, what is it that makes Seattle so appealing to us. It was an easy question to answer, all of the above. Seattle is a whole package, it's the complete deal in the world of all inclusive vacationing.
- Pike Place Market - overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, the market opened August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continually operated public farmers' markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many small farmers, craftspeople and merchants. Named after the central street, Pike Place runs northwest from Pike Street to Virginia Street, and remains one of Seattle's most popular tourist destinations.
